Small China Red

Small Red China - or Yueh Yueh Hung, 'Monthly Red' or Yueh Chi which means 'Monthly Rose' is a small two by two bush with singularly attractive, medium red, two inch blooms sporting bright red stamens. Curiously notched, each petal appears to be a valentine with a soft velvety texture. Small enough to grow in a pot on the patio or balcony, this plant perches on a limestone out cropping in the back yard, fighting for space with mealy blue sage and wild strawberry plants. It didn't bloom during the drought of 1996, but it never dropped any of its leaves and has come back with a vengeance this spring, being the first to bloom. True to its Chinese heritage, it is superbly drought and alkaline tolerant.
